Judaism, Zionism, and the Land of Israel

A book cover for Rabbi Yotav Eliach. The cover outlines the land of Israel with an inset image of people praying at the western wall.

“With passion, clarity, eloquence and most of all love, Yotav Eliach lays out the story of Zionism and the case for Israel. At a time when that story is under systematic attack, Rabbi Eliach has given the Jewish people an indispensable gift.” Yossi Klein Halevi, author of We Were Like Dreamers

The Proportions of Man

The Proportions of Man

by Margie Kuhn

Opening Reception – Final Friday
September 27, 2019 5:30 – 9:00 pm
at Tallgrass Studios

Show runs September 27October 18, 2019

A Lawrence native, Margie Kuhn received undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Kansas. A full-time artist, she works daily in her home studio with the assistance of two Cornish Rex cats.

Margie has based this installation of drawings on the extensive studies of ideal human proportions produced by Albrecht Dürer from 1512 to 1528. She examines how those ideals translate through history and how our society represents icons, idols, and ideals in contemporary material culture. Focusing solely on drawings, Margie looks at the role of drawings as fine art, as well as being a record of the thinking process.

Reflections at City Center in Lenexa

Reflections at City Center in Lenexa

We love working with Vantage Point Properties because they understand and enjoy the creative process. They develop exceptional commercial real estate environments that are amazing to look at, fun to work in and impressive to visit. Reflections at City Center is more than a typical office park and we took our inspiration for this identity from the large reflecting pools that anchor the development and create a walkable campus that includes three restaurants, modern landscape design, and patios. The logo design captures the spirit of this architectural project by incorporating elements of reflections on water and glass, transparency, a blending of the outdoor and the indoor, and modern design.

“My work is a blending of photography and painting. I paint with a computer. Digital painting is an emerging art form where traditional painting techniques and styles are applied using a computer as a tube of paint and a digital tablet and stylus for a paint brush. Each brush stoke is applied individually, by hand. I consider the camera my sketchbook. When I look through the lens I see the beginning of a work of art. It is the bones on which to build.”

Robbin Loomas, an award winning photographer and digital artist, received her BFA in photography from the Kansas City Art Institute. Working as a freelance photographer in Kansas City, then as head of photography for University Relations at KU, she now has her own studio, in Lawrence, Kansas. Robbin creates paintings from her photography, and does commissioned work from the images of others. She teaches this technique and painting style at the Lawrence Arts Center, Baker University and to professionals throughout the Midwest. You can view her work online at www.robbinloomas.com.

Paxico Sausage (Paxico, KS) – Logo & Packaging Design

Simple design never gets old.

We first designed these labels almost 15 years ago. The logo harkens back to the post-Civil War era yet manages a clean and modern feel. The label packs an abundance of information but doesn’t feel like too much – a harmonious color scheme and well-structured typography for the win!

Kara Gardens (Lawrence, KS) – Branding Strategy & Logo Design

Kara Gardens (Lawrence, KS) – Branding Strategy & Logo Design

Tallgrass Studios worked with representatives of Kara Gardens to create a flexible branding strategy to market their flowers and crops, and promote the connection of the earth with the community. Their new identity encompasses imagery that emulates the beauty, personality, culture, and connection that a garden brings to life. The work included a new symbol, logotype, tagline, color scheme, fonts, and a graphic standards document.

Kara being a Celtic word for connection, the spirals in the icon are influenced by traditional Celtic knotwork and imagery. The soft spring color palette and stylized floral elements were influenced by the client’s embroidered wedding memento that included a flowering vine. An approachable, handwritten typeface complements the icon and reinforces the welcoming nature of Kara Gardens.

Lauretta Hendricks Backus sculpts from her studio in the country outside of Lawrence, KS. Retta, an artist and retired art teacher known for her drawings and paintings, has only recently strayed from working in two dimensions. Meeting and working with other ceramicists, she discovered a passion for sculpting the human form. Retta’s obsession in particular is with “traditionally built women”.

This show’s focus is political in that Retta’s images of human female beauty do not subscribe to the marketed, mass produced or commercialized ideal of women. Retta’s women are strong, natural and comfortable in their skin. These porcelain sculptures show skin, muscle, flesh and gravity, celebrating the beauty of real women.
