The Proportions of Man

by Margie Kuhn

Opening Reception – Final Friday
September 27, 2019 5:30 – 9:00 pm
at Tallgrass Studios

Show runs September 27October 18, 2019

A Lawrence native, Margie Kuhn received undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Kansas. A full-time artist, she works daily in her home studio with the assistance of two Cornish Rex cats.

Margie has based this installation of drawings on the extensive studies of ideal human proportions produced by Albrecht Dürer from 1512 to 1528. She examines how those ideals translate through history and how our society represents icons, idols, and ideals in contemporary material culture. Focusing solely on drawings, Margie looks at the role of drawings as fine art, as well as being a record of the thinking process.

“My work is a blending of photography and painting. I paint with a computer. Digital painting is an emerging art form where traditional painting techniques and styles are applied using a computer as a tube of paint and a digital tablet and stylus for a paint brush. Each brush stoke is applied individually, by hand. I consider the camera my sketchbook. When I look through the lens I see the beginning of a work of art. It is the bones on which to build.”

Robbin Loomas, an award winning photographer and digital artist, received her BFA in photography from the Kansas City Art Institute. Working as a freelance photographer in Kansas City, then as head of photography for University Relations at KU, she now has her own studio, in Lawrence, Kansas. Robbin creates paintings from her photography, and does commissioned work from the images of others. She teaches this technique and painting style at the Lawrence Arts Center, Baker University and to professionals throughout the Midwest. You can view her work online at www.robbinloomas.com.

Born and raised in Prairie Village, Kansas, Nick Schmiedeler attended Rockhurst High School then went on to Kansas State University and Avila University where he received a Bachelor’s in Nursing in 1995.

Moving to Lawrence, Kansas in 1996 with his wife Cindy, they purchased a 19th century craftsman home in Old West Lawrence where a rustic, folk-art environment was being cultivated. Their art environment home was featured on HGTV’s “Home Strange Home” series in December of 2012.

Utilizing salvage and scrap metal yards often, along with city alleys, nature trails, river banks, and other locales, Nick searches out natural, discarded, and reusable materials to create indoor and outdoor sculptures.

Nick has been exhibiting and selling sculptures throughout the Midwest for about 20 years. Many of his pieces can be found on his website, nickschmiedeler.com.

Lauretta Hendricks Backus sculpts from her studio in the country outside of Lawrence, KS. Retta, an artist and retired art teacher known for her drawings and paintings, has only recently strayed from working in two dimensions. Meeting and working with other ceramicists, she discovered a passion for sculpting the human form. Retta’s obsession in particular is with “traditionally built women”.

This show’s focus is political in that Retta’s images of human female beauty do not subscribe to the marketed, mass produced or commercialized ideal of women. Retta’s women are strong, natural and comfortable in their skin. These porcelain sculptures show skin, muscle, flesh and gravity, celebrating the beauty of real women.
